The North East of England has proved to be one of the most successful locations for inward investment in the UK. Over 540 overseas companies employing around 20,000 people have chosen to establish a production or major facility in the area. A third are based in Tyne and Wear, the area’s major centre of population, business and communications.

Tyne and Wear has a broad based and export orientated economy. It has a long and proven track record in engineering and an established ability to respond to changing technologies and markets.

These factors were central to Nissan’s decision to locate its European automotive production centre in Sunderland in 1986. Nissan’s Sunderland plant has now come top of the European car productivity league for the seventh year running.

Within Europe and the UK, Tyne and Wear has been the outstanding performer. As well as Nissan other leading industry investors include Calsonic Kansei, TRW, Hashimoto, Gestamp UK and Faurecia.

Tyne and Wear is also the location for the International Automotive Conference which is a gathering of VMs and Tier suppliers at a senior level from purchasing, engineering, design, manufacturing and logistics. For more information on the conference visit www.iacsunderland.com.
