Big Lottery Fund Chooses Tyne And Wear

Tyne and Wear’s skilled workforce, strong business support network and first class portfolio of commercial properties sets it apart from other areas of the UK and makes it an ideal home for public sector organisations.

When the Big Lottery Fund was looking to open an operational centre outside London it was quick to choose Newcastle as one of its key regional centres for the distribution of lottery cash.

Big Lottery Fund created more than 150 jobs in Newcastle in summer 2005, opening its new northern headquarters in the city’s St James’ Gate Development.

It is one of the biggest public sector organisations to have relocated from the capital following the Lyons Review and was assisted throughout the relocation process by Tyne and Wear Development Company.

Tyne and Wear Development Company headed a business support team which included Newcastle City Council, One NorthEast and Government Office for the North East.

Sir Clive Booth, chair of the Big Lottery Fund, opened the new office with Richard Caborn, Minister for Sport, and paid a glowing tribute to the role played by Tyne and Wear Development Company.

Speaking at the launch he said: “The full backing of Tyne and Wear Development Company was critical for us. We greatly appreciate the enthusiasm they showed from the start and the advice they provided throughout the process.”

Big Lottery Fund will soon employ upwards of 250 people in Newcastle.
