Tyne and Wear has emerged as a successful location for contact centres and customer service facilities. These not only include local and national operations but also those serving international markets.
Activities include account and customer service operations, mainly for financial institutions, insurance services, call centre reservation and ticketing, and proactive telemarketing.
Organisations as diverse as AA Insurance, British Airways, Barclaycall, EDF Energy, New Logic, Sage Software, Orange and Procter and Gamble have invested in the area.
All have made use of the large resident population and the stable and highly skilled workforce that has a history of adapting to both changing products and the changing work environment.
To support the Contact Centre industry in the region, Tyne and Wear Development Company organises the North East Contact Centre Awards, an annual award ceremony that rewards front line staff for best practice and customer service. Previous winners have included Sage Software, T-Mobile, MB&G Insurance and Lloyds TSB.
