education and training
Tyne and Wear has three large universities – Newcastle, Northumbria and Sunderland. The universities are committed to working with businesses and development agencies to provide graduates with the skills for tomorrow.
Working with the Regional Development Agency, the universities have made graduate retention a major strategic goal.
This process has been accelerated as other activities across Tyne and Wear stimulate the business climate and create more opportunities for graduates. In addition to the three large universities in Tyne and Wear there are two others in the North East – Teesside and Durham University – within less than one hour’s drive from Newcastle.
More students than ever before are now attending these universities and a rising number are joining and remaining within the local workforce.
University of Newcastle:
The University of Newcastle upon Tyne is a popular red brick civic university with an excellent reputation in teaching and research. It is closely integrated into the economic, cultural and social life of the North East, and graduates are much sought-after by employers nationwide. It has almost 18,000 students, both full and part-time and offers over 210 taught undergraduate courses and over170 taught postgraduate courses plus a wide range of research degrees.
University of Northumbria at Newcastle:
Northumbria University is one of the largest universities in the country offering over 500 study programmes to more than 24,000 students. The university operates across two campuses; its main site is located in Newcastle city centre and it has a smaller satellite campus at Coach Lane, on the outskirts of the city.
University of Sunderland:
The University of Sunderland is a dynamic modern university with a growing reputation. The quality of its courses is underpinned by excellent teaching ratings and it is the best ‘new’ university in the UK for overall quality, quantity and range of research. The university offers 184 full time undergraduate and postgraduate courses to nearly 17,000 students.
Tyne and Wear also has five main further education colleges. The colleges are spread across the region and many operate from multiple campuses – giving easy access to educational resources no matter where you are in Tyne and Wear. The colleges operate part time, full time, work-based and college-based courses as well as seminars, short courses, consultancy and business services for local companies.
Many of the education and training establishments are prepared to organize tailored courses, both on and off site, to meet the needs of any company.
The Tyne and Wear Learning and Skills Council (LSC) co-ordinates the training needs of industry with the various public and private organizations providing training and education in the area. The LSC is key partner in a well-established network of organizations working to meet all the needs of investors.
