quality of life
The variety and quality of lifestyle options that a region offers an investor are of increasing importance to businesses in the recruitment and retention of staff.
Tyne and Wear offers good standards of living, an excellent choice of homes and locations, high quality private and state schools and a transport system second to none. The area provides a cosmopolitan range of leisure and social amenities as well as having some of the UK's best countryside on its doorstep.
Cost of Living
Living in Tyne and Wear allows more disposable income. Lower housing and living costs allow a family to enjoy the same standard of living as in the South East of England and save an average of 28% on their outgoings.
In recent years the North East of England, of which Tyne and Wear is the heart, has consistently been ranked among the two highest-rated regions in the Quality of Life index.
This index, produced by independent consultancy the Reward Group, compares different UK regions using various criteria linking food, fuel, transport and housing costs to disposable income and salaries earned.
Schools
The North East has an excellent mixture of private and state schools at both primary and secondary level. In Tyne and Wear alone there are around 500 schools, which include some of the best in the UK. Standards are high and pupil/teacher ratios are low.
Investment in education by local authorities is among the highest in the UK. Particular emphasis is now being placed on foreign language education and Information and Communication Technology skills.
Raising aspirations and attainment within primary and secondary schools is a strategic priority within the region as part of the general drive to develop an even higher skilled workforce.
Housing
The variety and quality of lifestyle options that a region offers an investor is of increasing importance to businesses in the recruitment and retention of staff.
Tyne and Wear offers good standards of living and an excellent choice of homes and locations.
Home can be a seaside terrace, a luxury quayside apartment, a Victorian or Georgian town house or a modern, architect
designed development. Many of the new business parks have housing developments being built nearby to ensure availability
of homes for staff and managers.
The housing market is buoyant and prices are following the national upward trend, but remain competitively priced compared to other UK regions. Click here to view data on Average UK House Prices
