Regional Benefits
Public sector organisations and Government departments choosing to relocate to Tyne and Wear can enjoy the following regional benefits:
A loyal and flexible workforce
With a resident population of approximately 1.1 million people, Tyne and Wear offers one of the lowest levels of absenteeism in the UK, one of the lowest turnover levels and a high percentage of flexible working patterns.
Employee costs in Tyne and Wear are highly competitive and a major overhead benefit for organisations considering relocation to the region. The average weekly wage in Tyne and Wear is £395.50 compared to £634.20 in London.
Commercial property
Tyne and Wear boasts some of the best business sites in the UK, all at highly competitive costs. The average rent for a prime office in Newcastle City Centre is £210m2 compared to £699m2 in the City of London.
An enviable transport infrastructure
Tyne and Wear has an excellent transport infrastructure that links the region to the rest of the UK, Europe and the rest of the world. With an international airport, major sea ports, extensive rail and road connections and a well integrated public transport system all destinations can be easily reached. London is 272 miles (440km) from Newcastle with average journey times being 5 hours by road, less than 3 hours by rail and one hour by air.
The region’s infrastructure also means that the roads do not suffer the congestion of many other regional conurbations or the difficulties experienced by commuters in the South East of England, making it quicker and easier to get to and from work. Over 33% of residents in Tyne and Wear travel to work in less than 10 minutes with only 2.7% taking an hour or more, resulting in more leisure time for workers.
Communications
The North East is part of the main national communications network provided by BT and Mercury Communications, the two main national providers in the UK, and more than £100 million has been invested in the region’s telecommunications infrastructure in recent years. In addition, the country's first teleport outside London is based in Sunderland, which will halve telecommunication costs for businesses and education in the region.
