Tyne and Wear is now at the forefront of technological growth in the UK and a world-class player in the IT area. Over 150 IT and software development related companies and 400 new digital media firms have made their base here, including leading names such as Sage and Orange, and games developers such as Reflections, Eutechnyx and Mere Mortals.
This cluster of companies is supported by Codeworks, the Centre for Digital Excellence, which will invest over £200 million in the development of knowledge based industries over the next five years.
Also in the pipeline are a number of property developments specifically designed for IT businesses:
- Knowledge Campus at Gateshead Quays - £100 million development offering 500,000 sq.ft of floor space for high technology investors
- Newcastle Great Park - 80 hectares of state of the art commercial development located only a few miles from Newcastle International Airport and home to the new headquarters of Sage
- Rainton Bridge - 25.5 hectare development near Houghton le Spring and adjacent to arterial routes that link Durham and Sunderland
