Background
The University of Sunderland is a dynamic modern university with a growing reputation. The quality of its courses is underpinned by excellent teaching ratings and it is the best ‘new’ university in the UK for overall quality, quantity and range of research. A recent survey commissioned by The Times Higher Education Supplement named Sunderland the ‘best university for student experience’ in England.

Research / teaching ratings
The University has a growing reputation for high quality research, confirmed by the results of the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE, December 2001), which showed that Sunderland is the best ‘new’ university (former polytechnic) overall in the UK for research.
The University attracted £12m in research funding and other external income in collaboration with industry. Sunderland is one of the most successful universities in the UK in terms of its efficiency in generating external research income – for every £1 of core research funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England, the University attracts £3.45m of external research income.
Industry / Business links
The University has strong partnerships with local commerce and industry, with employability and enterprise featuring heavily in many courses. The University has a dedicated business development team enabling companies to tap into University expertise.
