Computer Company Invests For Growth
A Newcastle company that is set to transform PC use has keyed into support from Tyne and Wear Development Company as it gets ready for growth.
Broadband Computer Company has patented a landmark easy-to-operate system for use in homes and offices.
Following trials of the product, the company has invested in new premises at St James’ Boulevard in Newcastle with support from Tyne and Wear Development Company as it looks to refine the system for market.
The system, which runs on bespoke hardware and software including its own unique operating system, provides applications to the user via broadband – meaning they have none of the operational, management and maintenance issues of a normal PC.
Andy Hudson, chief operations officer at Broadband Computer Company, said: “This is computing at its simplest. It’s designed to be hassle free for someone who’s never been on a computer before – and research has shown there are around 2 million at least in the UK.
“We started from the premise that we wanted computers to be as easy-to-use as any other utility in the home – like the kettle or the TV. This is the end result. All users do is switch on, identify themselves with a unique latchkey we’ve patented and away they go with our support.”
The system offers a wide range of functions including all the usual office applications, email, web access, telephone and photo shop. There is even a bespoke video help function. The product will reach the UK market in 2008 and be sold internationally the year after.
Andy added: “Trials have shown there’s a strong domestic market – particularly among the over 50s. Given that the system is so easy to manage, we will also be producing a business model.
“We needed a base in Newcastle that was central and had good access to transport links for clients visiting from London. Tyne and Wear Development Company were able to find a property that met all of these criteria and has space for growth.
“Their support was critical and a key reason why we’re based here. They helped us plan the move and put us in touch with the excellent network of business support services based in the region.”
Paul Buie, manager of Tyne and Wear Development Company, said: “This is an innovative product that has exciting potential. The new facilities offer the company space for expansion. It’s encouraging to see new knowledge-based companies like this emerging across Tyne and Wear.”
