The digital and software industry is growing at a rapid rate in the region with clusters of new and fast growing businesses emerging in Tyne and Wear. Outside London, the area has one of the highest technology start-ups rates – and is home to major names like Sage and Leighton Group.
The region is a hotbed of creative talent and has a vibrant gaming sector with companies like Eutechnyx, one of the world’s leading developers of driving platform games, achieving great success.
Companies in this sector have been able to take advantage of the excellent range of high-tech business parks and the high volume of skilled graduates from each of the region’s universities. Sunderland University has one of the country’s best computer science courses in the UK.
The growth of the digital industry has been assisted by Codeworks, the Centre for Digital Excellence, which has invested millions in the development of knowledge-based businesses.
Sunderland’s Software City initiative and Gateshead Council’s new superfast broadband G-ti network (Gateshead Technology Innovation) will assist the creation of new businesses, driving growth and the transfer of technology in this fast moving industry.
